First Grant to Big City Mountaineers - October 12, 2017 - Brian's 34th Birthday

In honor of what would have been Brian's 34th Birthday we made our first grant to Big City Mountaineers of Golden, Colorado. Our grant of $5,000 will enable a Summer 2018 week long mentoring expedition in the mountains of Colorado for 5 under - resourced youths aged 13-18.

We know this is something Brian would love to support as he believed in the value of outdoor experiences as teaching moments.  Allowing under-resourced youths the opportunity to discover the serenity and opportunties in the outdoors at such young ages could change the trajectory of their lives.

Some facts on BCM:

  • BCM’s mission is to instill critical life skills in under-resourced youth through transformative wilderness mentoring experiences.
  • We provide free – fully outfitted and professionally led – backpacking, paddling, and camping trips in partnership with local youth development agencies.
  • We engage youth ages 8-18, 83% of whom qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program, and 51% of whom come from single parent or guardian led households. The racial/ethnic composition our youth is: 38% Hispanic/Latino, 25% African American, 18% Caucasian, 13% Other/Mixed Race, 5% Asian-American/Pacific Islander, and 1% Native American.
  • Our expeditions provide a safe and supportive environment for youth to develop teamwork, an increased sense of self, understanding of their place in the world, a passion for lifelong learning, and a commitment to environmental stewardship.
